Tire puncture: repair or replace?

AP Cars shop image

A puncture is not automatically repairable. The damage location, tire condition and relevant repair guidance determine which options may be appropriate.

Details that make the next step clearer

Tell the team whether the tire was driven flat, whether there is visible sidewall damage and how quickly pressure was lost. Do not continue driving on a visibly damaged or flat tire. Ask for the actual inspection result instead of relying on a photo or a plug as proof of a suitable permanent repair.

Bring the right information

Prepare the vehicle year, make, model and approximate mileage. Include relevant service records and describe the concern in your own words: when it began, how often it happens and the conditions that bring it on. A safely recorded warning message can help provide context, but it does not replace the appropriate inspection.

Understand the recommendation

Ask what was actually observed or tested, what remains uncertain and which work is recommended. Review the written scope and estimate before deciding. A useful explanation connects the evidence to the next step without pressure or an unsupported promise.

Does tread depth alone determine repairability?

No. Damage and the condition of the complete tire also matter.

A practical reminder

A damaged tire or severe pressure loss can be unsafe. Avoid continuing to drive on a visibly damaged or flat tire.
